The Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLA) is a pan-African platform that brings together First Ladies from across the continent to advocate for policies and initiatives that improve the lives of women, children, and vulnerable communities. Established in 2002, OAFLA works closely with governments, regional institutions, and international partners to accelerate social and economic development in Africa.
Janet Kataaha Museveni, the First Lady of Uganda and Minister of Education and Sports, has actively participated in the work of OAFLA. Through this continental platform, she has supported initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of women and children while strengthening cooperation among African First Ladies in addressing shared development challenges.
Her engagement in OAFLA has focused on advocacy, awareness, and support for programs that promote inclusive growth and social protection across the continent.
Through OAFLA initiatives and partnerships, Janet Museveni has contributed to several priority areas, including:
OAFLA champions programs that reduce maternal and infant mortality by promoting access to quality healthcare, antenatal services, and nutrition for mothers and children.
The organization has played a key role in mobilizing leaders and communities to strengthen prevention, treatment, and care programs, particularly for women and young people affected by HIV/AIDS.
Education is a central pillar of OAFLA’s mission. Through advocacy and partnerships, the organization supports improved access to quality education, especially for girls and disadvantaged communities.
OAFLA advocates for policies that promote gender equality, women’s leadership, and economic empowerment as essential drivers of sustainable development.
The organization also promotes initiatives that strengthen social safety nets, support vulnerable populations, and improve livelihoods across African communities.
By participating in OAFLA initiatives, Janet Museveni has contributed to strengthening collaboration among African leaders and institutions. The organization provides a platform for First Ladies to share experiences, mobilize resources, and advocate for policies that address pressing social and development issues across Africa.
Through these efforts, OAFLA continues to play an important role in advancing health, education, and social development across the continent while fostering collective leadership among African First Ladies.
