Hon. Janet Kainembabazi Kataaha Museveni has served as the First Lady of the Republic of Uganda since 29 January 1986. A trained educator, legislator, Cabinet Minister, and distinguished advocate for social development, she has dedicated her life to improving the welfare of children, women, youth, and families in Uganda. Early Life and Education

Janet Kainembabazi Kataaha was born on 24 June 1948 in Kajara County, Ntungamo District, southwestern Uganda. She was raised in Bwongyera and attended Kyamate Primary School before proceeding to Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School.

Early Life and Education

Janet Kainembabazi Kataaha was born on 24 June 1948 in Kajara County, Ntungamo District, southwestern Uganda. She was raised in Bwongyera and attended Kyamate Primary School before proceeding to Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School.

She trained as a teacher and later earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Makerere University. She also holds a Diploma in Early Childhood Development from Sweden and a Master’s degree in Organisational Leadership and Management. Her academic background laid a strong foundation for her lifelong work in education, child development, and public administration.

Family

Janet Museveni is married to H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda. Together, they have four children:

She is also a proud grandmother. Her role as a wife, mother, and grandmother has greatly influenced her advocacy for strong families, child protection, education, and youth mentorship.

Role as First Lady

Since assuming the role of First Lady in 1986, Janet Museveni has gone beyond ceremonial responsibilities to provide purposeful leadership in social transformation. She has been a strong national voice on maternal and child health, women’s empowerment, youth development, HIV/AIDS prevention, and moral regeneration.

She has worked closely with government institutions, faith-based organisations, civil society, and international partners to implement programmes that directly impact communities at grassroots level.
