FIRST LADY AND SAVE THE CHILDREN’S CHIEF MEET
The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Mrs. Janet Museveni on Thursday met and held talks with the Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children International, also the former Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning- Schmidt.
The meeting took place at Speke Resort Munyonyo just before they co-chaired a Solidarity Summit side event entitled “Solidarity: A Route Towards Education for All” that was co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and Sports in partnership with Save the Children.
Mrs. Museveni and Save the Children’s Chief were also joined by the First Lady of Somalia Mrs Saynab Moallim. They discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to refugees especially enabling refugee children access to quality education.
Mrs. Janet Museveni appreciated the Solidarity summit and hoped it would help address the infrastructure and social services delivery challenges in refugee host communities. She said the big numbers of refugees overwhelm the existing health and education facilities. “We want the social services to be commensurate with the surging numbers of refugees and the host communities”.
Janet Museveni thanked Save the Children for their partnership in organizing the side event meeting to discuss the importance of ensuring quality education for both refugees and Ugandan children.
Helle Thorning- Schmidt applauded the Government of Uganda for co- hosting the Solidarity Summit on Refugees together with the United Nations. She said this shows Uganda’s commitment to the ensuring that the rights of refugees are protected.
The Save the Children Chief also commended Uganda for its welcoming refugee policy and response.
